The four most common French prepositions are “à” (to, at), “de” (from, of), “avec” with, “chez” (at the house of) as well as “en” and “dans” (both meaning “in”). In language, a preposition is a word preceding a noun or pronoun. The page covers 30 essential French prepositions and provides practical example sentences.
There are exceptions where just the noun is used, without the partitive and article. For example: to hike > faire une randonnée. Some sports also have their own verb, which is a one-word verb form of the noun. Those are listed in the right-hand column below. For example: to wrestle > faire de la lutte or lutter.

The possessive de can’t be used with stressed pronouns; they require the possessive à. When the owner is plural, as signified by s’ (s apostrophe) in English, the French modifier must be plural.
