A few ways to tell if your BMW X5 transmission is starting to develop an issue: You have trouble shifting into any gear. You select the gear and the vehicle doesn't go anywhere. There is excessive movement in the shifter. You could be causing more damage the more you drive, also with the transmission not going into reverse, there is a chance The needed oil change on the distribution gearbox (VTG) is also pressing as it increases wear on the transmission (and a transmission breakdown is the economic write-off in your situation). The glow-plug related errors indicate a past electrical fault, unless you experience starting problems on cold weather you could treat them with less 2004–2006 BMW X5 (E53) V8 and 3.0D (6HP 26Z) 2007–2013 BMW X5 (E70) (some facelift models use 8HP) 2007–2010 BMW 5 series LCI (xdrive) 2003-2010 Porsche Cayenne; 2003-2010 VW Touareg; 6HP 32. The 6HP 32 is a variation of the 6HP 26 for high-output applications. The gearbox's maximum input torque is 750 N⋅m (553 lbf⋅ft). Applications The switch in the photos above is actually on a Ranger Rover 5HP24 but the E53 is identical except for the length of the wires (it therefore has a different part number). The wires are longer on the Range Rover as the connector is mounted up above the transmission bellhousing - rather than below it on the X5 - presumably for ‘off-road
